What do you think makes a text a work of literature? What qualities or criteria does a piece of literature have to make it worth studying? Provide an example of a text that you consider to be worthy of studying.
I think that if a text makes a person think and wonder that it is literature. I feel as though literature should challenge one's mind. I think symbolism is in most pieces of literature as well as a story that grabs the audience. Even "boring" pieces of literature seem to be interesting once it makes sense to the reader. I think that the book I read this summer for the summer assignment, Interpreter of Maladies, is definitely worth studying as it had many life themes as well as interesting culture involved in the stories. Each "chapter" was a different story yet they all grabbed my attention.
A text can be considered as literature if it gives a way of thinking, shows how people thought at a different time period or in a different area, teaches a life lesson, or gives a different perspective on life. A text is worth studying if it helps those studying it in the way of opening their minds to different ideas. An example of a text that is worth being studied is the Scarlet Letter. It has good concepts and definitely causes the reader to think differently about different situations.
Anything that follows a specific theme can be a work of literature. Every piece of literature that I have watched or read had an idea that it followed throughout the whole piece. There might be a certain point of advice that the piece may follow and explain more and more. However, it could be a theme of a certain era such as idealist or realist. I think that Into the Wild is a great piece of literature to study because it is a piece that shows people into the world of a man who chose to not conform to society and go out on his own.
A text becomes a work of literature once it has stood the test of time. Texts that have a profound impact on some sphere of the world tend to not be forgotten. They are remembered and passed on. Eventually they become studied for their worth. The only real criteria for a text to become literature is that it has an impact on the reader. This can come in a variety of ways. Its impact can come from a revolutionary new writing style, or a profound idea it expresses, or it becomes the symbol for a movement, or another one of a plethora of ways a text can have meaning. At this point I consider Harry Potter to be a text worthy of study. Somehow this series of books convinced a generation of students moving away from reading and towards technology to start reading again. It has had a monumental impact, and therefore, deserves to be studied.
I think literature is defined by the culture. The culture decides what is literature by looking for meaningful and impacting pieces of fiction. Pieces of literature that are worth studying have layers within the stories: there is a deeper meaning. They should also be relevant and powerful pieces of fiction. The Great Gatsby, Animal Farm, 1984, and Persuasion are all pieces of literature worth studying.
I think what makes a work of literature is, is being monumental in the ideas it conveys, such as feminism like that of the Awakening. Also, in the way it is written and how well it conveys the ideas it means to. For example, MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech,MLK wrote a very persuasive speech. MLK speech is worthy of studying because he wrote a speech with ideas that were monumental, and then conveyed them using multiple rhetorical devices.
I think a text is considered literature when it is well written and conveys a message or belief. Usually in literature there is a lot of symbolism and the work can be analyzed to reveal the author's ideas. I believe novels like The Awakening and The Scarlet Letter are worth studying because there are a lot of ideas and symbolic situations conveyed through the author's writing.
I believe a text becomes a work of literature when it leaves a lasting impression on the reader and society as a whole. To make it worth studying, the literature has to have a purpose and some sort of wisdom to give to the readers, which, in turn, can help us interpret our own lives or emotions. A good text to study would be Wuthering Heights because it is full of emotion which is worth studying. Plus, this book is high on many classics to read which means it has left a lasting impression on many people.
I think it should be a writing with substance. It doesn't necessarily need a specific length, but it should be written well enough to provoke satisfaction and allow people to engage in discussion over it. It should also be meaningful; this can be left up to interpretation, but a general consensus should be able to be reached among a relative group of people. I think "The Great Gatsby" is a perfect book that fits this criteria. It greatly explains the fast-paced big-city life of the modern day, which is an incredible feat considering it was published many decades ago. It is also simple to read, as it is written in a pretty modern style of English that anyone today can easily understand. While this may normally disqualify a book from being considered great literature, this book is an exception. Even if you didn't enjoy reading it, nobody can deny it's brilliance as a literary work.
A work of literature is something that will make you think, whether is be two hours or two weeks. The difference between text and literature is the literature is meant to be more profound and in depth. In order to learn and connect things in the world, we dissect the thoughts placed in front of us by literature. To be worth studying, a piece of literature should provide those reading with multiple different trains of thought and questions. When people read literature they should be able to discuss different themes and thoughts in a way that can be considered advanced and complex. An example in my eyes would be "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This novel is an iconic piece of literature as the theme is carries is one that can be considered timeless: money. Along with that there is an abundance of symbolism and diction that leads to an in depth discussion among those who have read it. It's also a good movie :-)
I think literature can be defined as a text that carries a message through the art form that is writing. Any text that is timeless and symbolic can be considered literature in my opinion. Literature can vary in all forms, from novels to poetry; therefore there isn't a certain structure that a text needs to follow. To make a text worth studying, I think it's important for it to be able to endure time and still be relatable, no matter what what time period it is. An example of text worth studying would be "The Great Gatsby" because of its resonance to the contemporary reality, and its characters are complex and relatable. A text can offer a very different perspective that can alter your mindset temporarily or for a long period of time. The way that a text can do this varies through theme and language, which is another quality of literature.
